Painted eggs are considered to be one of the main symbols of Easter table.
According to the legend, tradition to paint eggs was connected with Maria Magdalena. To arouse the interest for Christianity among those who were in power, she brought red painted egg to emperor Tiberiy with the words "Christ has arisen" The red color of the egg reminds that the redemption of humanity happened with the Saviour bloodshed on the cross.
Like many years ago, now Christians give coloured eggs to each other, saying "Christ has arisen – Truly has"!
Coming from the church, people eat consecrated eggs first, they give painted eggs to relatives, friends, take them when they are going to visit someone, give them to the beggary, leave at the church.
In Russia and Ukraine there has been a tradition to paint eggs in different ornaments, which were called "pisanki (писанкі)". Pisanki could depict nature sceneries, ornaments, icons and churches.
Easter eggs are also made of wood, glass, chocolate, gold and silver decorated with precious stones.
Easter cake, (Kulich, Paskha)
Easter cakes play an important role in a holiday ceremonial and are essential part of it. They are baked to commemorate Jesus Christ coming to his pupils after Resurrection from the dead and eating bread together with them. There are lots of recipes for baking cakes, but most popular are with raisins and curd.
In many Ukrainian families Easter cake recipes are kept from generation to generation.
